In my opinion, ” Duties and Responsibilities” and ” The way we conduct our Duties” are two different aspects of the workplace that require a different set of skills. “Job Duties ” majorly requires domain expertise and subject knowledge to perform the duties, Whereas “Way we conduct the duties” needs soft skills such as Self-Confidence, Collaboration, Communication skills, Accepting feedback, Appreciating others, Body Language and many more.

Interpersonal skills are simply the ability to interact in a better manner which builds an effective harmonious relationship. Are our colleges and Universities has any role in our interpersonal skills development?

The majority of institutions, Colleges, and Universities have a curriculum that emphasizes primarily on the Core subject in their field of study. But, there is drift observed in the western education system imparting education with the blend of soft skills or interpersonal skills. Unfortunately, In India expects a few top most colleges and universities, most of them follow traditional methods, even in the postgraduate level of education.

  Skills - In College and Colleges

Students main intention is to meet the technical demand of the positions in their field rather than soft skills. Students became writing machines who work three hours filling up the papers or I can say dumping their knowledge in the examination center. Some of their priorities are getting the best scores and becoming the expert in theoretical aspects of the subject. Students are leaving the institutions unprepared, unclear and fearful that are impacting their self-confidence in the long run.

I came across a pathetic situation, interviewing a student who has completed his degree with the medium of instruction as English and scored 97% in his English in Class X and XII unable to speak few words about himself one minute.

I came across many students who scored 75% above in all the subjects never speak to anyone in the class. They feel being alone is the quality of a decent student. I have seen the fear in the eyes of Postgraduate students when I asked them to be prepared for Presentations and Seminars. Students make their own comfort groups according to their psychology and spent their entire education sitting on the same bench with the same mates. 

There are hundreds of examples of students failing to exhibit interpersonal skills during their education.  Who should be blamed for it – The University who prepares the Curriculum, The Teachers who don’t create opportunity and busy in completing their syllabus or the students who just think only subject matter nothing else.

Interpersonal Skills – its importance

I am sure there are many  Internet articles and books in the library about the importance of interpersonal skills. Moreover, We all read and heard about the same from many experts that soft skills play a predominant role in fetching a job in this cut-throat competition. In fact, Somewhere down the line, we undermine the importance and give priority to the hard skills.

Ultimately, upon rejection we tend to realize, I missed out on the opportunity to prepare myself.  Therefore, we lose confidence and end up in the job we never wanted to do or jobless. Of course, “We face we believe, we hear, we don’t bother”.

According to National Survey 2019, by Rand Corporation America most of the Institutions in America are showing great emphasis on developing interpersonal skills in the student apart from thier usual curriculum.

Findings from the Statistics

They have surveyed 15000 teachers and 3500 principals of various institutions and given a detailed reports with three major findings:

  • 72% of principals said promoting interpersonal skills is thier top priority
  • 80% of the teachers said Promoting interpersonal skills in the students will help in improving the institution climate and student behavior.
  • 64% of the teachers accept that Institutional and student achievement can be only possible through imparting the interpersonal skills along with their academics.

India Skill Survey 2019

According to the India Skill report 2019 by NDTV in collaboration with Wheebox, PeopleStrong, Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), and supported and backed by All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and Association of Indian Universities (AIU).

Team Skill India 2019, assessed 3 lakh students from 29 states and 7 Union territories states clearly states that 70% of our students lack professional guidance in job hunting in their field of study.

Andhra Pradesh bagged first place for employment opportunity followed by Rajasthan and Haryana. Nirmal Singh, CEO- Weebox has added that there is a long way to go in bridging the gap between colleges and corporate.

In addition to the above, The report recommended that the institutions should create a platform for students to explore their knowledge, skills, and abilities. Further, 80% of students are willing to take internship opportunities, 85% of assessed candidates they lack professional career guidance.

The most important aspect revealed by the report is employers are unable to meet their needs. They prefer communication skills and quick learning ability apart from their domain knowledge. 60% of employers feel that there are no candidates available with the right skills to match their job.

1. Self Confidence

First and formost skills of the Top 6 skills of interpersonal skills is Self Confidence. It is simply the trust and one’s belief in himself. Work life isn’t something that can be forecasted, it thrills you with new things every day. You have no control over other things that happens and your self-confidence in dealing with these surprises determines your success.

How do I build my self-confidence?

Firstly, Have faith and believe in your actions and never undermine your capabilities. I wish you learn from your failures and do not let your negative thoughts take over it. When you come across an internal conflict within you, then be an observer. One of the main reasons that drain your self-confidence is people with low self-esteem and chronic complainers. Therefore, surround yourself with motivated people. Another technique is to have positive affirmations and videos that fill you with courage, confidence, and commitment towards your goals.

2. Positive attitude

Positive attitude It’s so simple to say than act positively. It depends upon our perception of others. Hence, need an open mind to accept the challenges. Students lack a positive attitude because of the concrete negative beliefs formed during all these years. It certainly reflects on any action we take. We choose to see things in an optimistic or pessimistic view. Moreover, the way we see not only impacts you but also your team or organization as a whole.

Hence, Organisations wants to have individuals to see a solution to the problem rather than the problem. A positive attitude can be cultivated by setting the belief system. I wish you conduct analysis thoroughly before drawing conclusions. There are problems and of course, there is a solution to any problem. It’s our positive mindset that allows you to see that solution.

Use of appropriate gestures and facial expression aid communication to make it effective. It is so important to analyze our body language when we communicate with others as it should correspond to the individual’s communication and the environment.

4. Accepting feedback and Appreciation

Human psychology is to hear always good about yourself and unwilling to accept the corrective feedback. It is important to accept the feedback and listen completely to what others are intended to say. It is all up to you, what do you like to keep and leave the rest. Feedback helps you to bring perfection in your work, Kindly ask for the feedback and work on it. Moreover, It is also important to give feedback to others. Giving feedback should be structured in a way which doesn’t insult others.
